The Difference between Green and Sustainable
“The current state of our green, sustainable building “movement” may amount to nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic”
The idea of energy efficient, healthy buildings has been around for a long time, so why is it just now that the concept of “green” or “sustainable” building is entering the mainstream and catching the attention of fortune 500 companies like Wall Mart, Dupont, and Home Depot? There are probably several reasons; Global Warming, rising energy costs, the growing awareness and liability costs associated with “Sick Building Syndrome”, declining oil reserves, and concerns about our limited water supply. The list goes on, but whatever the reason or reasons, sustainable building is a concept whose time has come.
Which begs the question, what is IT? The ultimate definition depends on how one defines “green” as opposed to how one defines “sustainable”.

Sustainability:
Definition of Sustainability refers to a quality and system of life that allows people to meet their current needs without compromising the resources available for future generations to meet their future needs.Concept of Sustainability
Sustainable living provides that we (humanity) synchronize our consumption of natural resources with the earth's production. In other words using up natural resources at the same rate at which they are produced. For example, given a hypothetical forest of 100 trees is able to produce 10 new trees per year while 2 trees die per year, then it is hypothetically sustainable to harvest 8 trees per year with out affecting the forest for indefinite amount of time.

What is green? What is sustainability?
You hear the terms "green" and "sustainable" tossed around together with the word "business" a lot these days, but you may wonder: What is it? What does it have to do with me? My business?
A lot, it turns out.
According to the 2007 BBMG Conscious Consumer Report, statistically weighted to reflect US Census data, nearly nine in ten Americans say the words “conscious consumer” describe them well and are more likely to buy from companies that manufacture energy efficient products (90%), promote health and safety benefits (88%), support fair labor and trade practices (87%) and commit to environmentally friendly practices (87%), if products are of equal quality and price.
That's right, green business isn't just for Kermit (or Moonbeam) anymore. Your customers care about it. So do your employees. So does the government, judging by the actions of Governor Schwarzenegger and many others, across the political spectrum. Change is coming. Are you ready for it? Ready to take advantage of it? Even if it doesn't seem apparent to you, scratch the surface just a little bit, and you'll find a range of concerns, hopes, desires there, that even a year ago, were not common.
